My road into Tapestry Weaving and dreams for the future

Meet the Course Maker

Lauren Carrera

Founder and Tapestry Weaving Instructor

Hello and welcome to Weaving a New Story!

I’m Lauren Carrera and I’m passionate about Tapestry Weaving. I know it is not as easy as it looks and that it can take quite a while on your own to get the hang of things, especially with life being so busy and finding consistent information in one place online being very tricky indeed.

After discovering Tapestry Weaving for myself during a challenging time in my life, I quickly became obsessed with learning everything I could about it. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study under Mexican Textile Artist, Karla Belinda Amezcua, a talented professional, creating and teaching textile art in her Mexico City based studio.

Upon returning to the UK, I started my Foundation Diploma in Tapestry Weaving at West Dean College of Art and Conservation, that houses one of the UK’s top professional Tapestry Weaving studios. It is a privilege I don’t take lightly.

Weaving with a “Why”…

Now, I am setting out on the next chapter of my Tapestry Weaving story by turning to teaching those of you who are new to Tapestry Weaving everything I wish I would have known at the start. Tapestry Weaving is a very niche art and my dream is to make it accessible and achievable for many more people. I want to create an online community of people who share the enjoyment of Tapestry Weaving, one we can all learn and grow in together.

Why? As I believe Tapestry Weaving has a lot to offer. It offers a totally unique creative medium- painting with yarn! It is relaxing and offers the chance for us to slow down and engage with our hands, thoughts and creativity. It is one of the few mediums that creates a sense of calm and challenge at the same time.

Weaving dreams for the future

Running parallel with the joy I find in weaving is a sincere burden for the UK’s homeless population. Long before I discovered Tapestry Weaving for myself, I knew I just had to do something, however small, with my future endeavours to help with this worrying and ever-pervasive issue. Looking to the future I hope to use this small business to create some positive change for the UK’s homeless. I would like to use Tapestry Weaving to help with both the mental health and financial aspects of homelessness. I personally find that Tapestry Weaving has a therapeutic nature to it and so think it could offer an outlet for homeless individuals struggling with their mental health, a safe and fun form of creative expression. That’s why my dream for the future is to host self-funded Tapestry Weaving workshops that would offer homeless individuals a peaceful space to process and get creative. I would also love to be in a position where I could use a portion of future profits from Weaving a New Story to help fund initiatives that make employment opportunities and training possible for individuals who want to put homelessness behind them. That’s the dream behind the name “Weaving a New Story”. I cannot offer any of that loveliness at this time but who knows what the future holds.

I am just setting out on my first small business endeavour so I appreciate your support and the interest you’ve taken in reading this.

Thank you very much!

I hope you’ll stick around to see how Weaving a New Story continues to unfold!

Stay safe and happy weaving,

Lauren X
